An Prediction Market Participant Profited $436,000 from Wagers Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.
Market Movement in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January increased in the period preceding Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.
A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Politicians are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
