New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these medications should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
